Description

I built this to use as a light workstation desktop (mostly when I need the extra horsepower to render some stuff like networked lightmap baking in UE4) and for gaming at 4k and for streaming in the near future. Paired together an RX 480 and a 1080 Ti and they work in tandem as necessary with no or minimal conflict.

I have to say, this thing is fking huge, I mean I knew it was gonna be big but not this big lol, but 'ey bigger is better :)

And yeah I overloaded with fans cus I wanted (crysis suit voice) MAXIMUM airflow

And because of how air runs through this, this one machine alone single-handedly warms my entire room during the winter.

Currently have:

CPU OC to 4.6 GHz RAM OC to 2400 MHz GPU CLOCK OC to 2037 MHz GPU MEMORY OC to 11000 MHz

I bought the mouse and keyboard with this build, but am actually using them for my old computer just for ergonomics, while this PC has my old Quickfire CMStorm mechanical keyboard and Logitech G700s.

Part Reviews

CPU

Intel Core i7-6700K 4 GHz Quad-Core Processor

Does its job, but I've had some CPU hiccups and some crashes at 4.6 GHz, happens rarely though.

CPU Cooler

Noctua NH-D15 82.5 CFM CPU Cooler

Immensely surprised at how well it does its job, puts my current all-in-one liquid cooler to shame.

Asus MAXIMUS VIII HERO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

It works, hasn't broken down yet as many reviews and reports have suggested.

Ram works but I wish the heat spreader was just a tiny bit lower so that the heatsink wouldn't put too much pressure on it when its seated.

Extremely fast SSD, what can I say, I love it!

Biggest HDD I need to stash my por- I mean games and backups. Has solid read and write transfer speeds, fastest HDD I've owned yet!

Games like a beast, stays extremely cool, overclocks really well even with a locked voltage and doesn't cause any problems being mixed in my system with an rx 480

Extremely big and extremely modular, just love dem cube cases!

Power Supply

EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

Does its job and hasn't blown up. EVGA is usually my goto for most of my past products.

It works. Burns CDs really quickly!

Case Fan

Thermaltake Riing 51.15 CFM 140 mm Fans 3-Pack

Ooooh pretty lights! Yet they sound like jet engines at max speed.

Nice fan controller but wish it had better cable management.

Keyboard

Extremely hard keyboard for a guy who bashes his keys like there's no tomorrow!

Extremely good battery life and fits my huge hand perfectly. Bluetooth support is also plus.

So, why not dual 1070s? And why spend 4k and only put a 250GB SSD in it? And why, with that many fans in it, it doesn't take off like a drone?

Simple, dual 1070s are at least twice as expensive. Plus I'm guessing he's got the 480s for their superior OpenCL performance (in their class).

And why spend 4k and only put a 250GB SSD in it?

Part of this is the fact that OP also included his entire home theater setup in the parts list, and the fact that he bought the Pro model.

And why, with that many fans in it, it doesn't take off like a drone?

I think the real question here is, why wouldn't you fill a case like this with as many fans as possible?

Nice. But you still didn't explain why it isn't hovering. (All those fans probably explains why it's on the floor on the other side of the desk where its harder to hear them.) :-)

Hmm maybe I need to hack the fan controller and ramp the fans to like 150 to 200% and then maybe it'll take off, at the cost of my ears blowing up :)

If you do, and it does, make sure to get pics and post them! (After patching the ceiling, of course.) This build really could use a couple of custom loops, but that's probably a couple of grand more... anyway, nice build regardless.

So biggles5107 answered a good amount of what my intentions were, but I was actually a pretty die hard Nvidia buyer before and always recommended them to my friends, but then I learnt of there shady business tactics on how they were trying to cripple AMD and how there have been reports of them crippling their older gen cards to make the newer ones look better, my Kepler cards have sadly met that fate and are not as good in the new games as I hoped they would've been. Heck my current crossfire setup outclasses my gtx titan and it doesnt help that one rx 480 has pretty comparable performance to a titan if not exceeding it as well.

I'd probably be running an AMD graphics card too if they had consistent performance and game support on Linux. I'm basically stuck with Nvidia since I run Linux :P

It seems Polaris has good Linux support and Vega will finally fix the support needed for workstation brand stuff, which will be extremely useful when programs start adopting OpenCL tech more.

This is true. AMD has been hard at work on their (relatively) new AMDGPU driver. I'm pretty impressed.

But as for me, I'm going to stick with Nvidia since they work better with my games :P

My hygiene is fine, it's just that with the mouse pad my friend spilled some turpentine and oil paint on it, and by the time I found out it was already too late to late to scrub it. That said the mouse pad still works well even though it's unsightly.

Space heater you mean? If you're talking about the rig how would it generate moisture heh heh, semantics though. OP that thing is a monster, temps good? If so and you like it, then its great. I like the part selection but I alway go SFF

The Temps are good as long as the room doesnt get too hot, so my Temps fluctuate a lot depending a lot on the ambient temp, and usually my housemate ramps the thermostat to 80 F and my room turns into a sauna. Ye I've never really been a big fan of small stuff, especially computers, cus my hands are just way too big to go through all the cracks and divets needed for cable management and part assembly.

I believe ek has some mounting hardware, which can be mounted on fans or radiators. So you can mount a pump/res combo on there or i'm sure there is something in the case manual. Also you can opt for a less aesthetically pleasing 5.25 inch res , and i see the bottom has plenty of space, so you can drill a couple holes and put a reservoir bracket there, it won't compromise the structural integrity and you won't see the holes since well.. they are on the bottom.

Vega preforms much worse than a 1080 ti so it would be a significant downgrade if he bought a vega card.

How much extra wires do you have for the fans compared to non RGB? Looking at getting 24-30 fans and can't decide if it's worth the extra cabling with the fan hubs/etc

So basically with the RGB set you get a mini fan controller that docks three fans and then one output that you connect right to you motherboard or in my case one main fan controller. So essentially I get one cable per fan that connects to the mini controller and then one more cable that outputs from the mini controller. If you do decide to buy that many fans make sure whatever you buy, you can minimize the number of cable outputs that you'll need at the very end. One good thing about this case is that since there's so many creaks around the edges I can just smush the cables inside there and for extra support, if they're towards the middle, I can just use a ziptie or plastic twist tie and hold it in place.

Very nice, after you get your vega's you should liquid cool this beast. It's not like you need to buy extra fans for your radiators.

I definitely will, just a matter of figuring out how to allocate space for the reservoirs, cus on the back its a complete mess with the amount of cables coming out of the PSU

Lol, I just saved up a few months worth of job money and proceeded to spend it all in one go. Needless to say my bank company didn't like the way I spent so much in one go xD
